German Fest Run to Help Feed Milwaukee's Hungry
German Fest has announced that St. Ben's Community Meal, a Capuchin ministry that feeds Milwaukee's homeless, will be the charity of choice for its twilight run.
The 5k run will be certified and will present age category awards. "This is our second year managing the German Fest run," Brother Dave Schwab, St. Ben's Community Meal director, explains. "We are presenting it as a runners' run. It will be professionally timed through CARRS, and we're doing our best to think of all the amenities serious runners look for when choosing a run."
Brother Dave is himself an avid runner and former cross country and track coach for the Capuchin's St Lawrence Seminary team.
"We are grateful for the Striders' support of this run," Brother Dave continues. "This run is a great way to make the community aware of Milwaukee's hungry. We feed 2,000 meals every week. Most of our guests are homeless. Some are chronically poor and need assistance to get to and from doctor appointments, job interviews, and similar."
Over 75 organizations and parishes provide hot, home-made dishes. They bring the food to the Meal Hall, which is located on 9th and State. "We call it Milwaukee's largest nightly potluck dinner," Brother Dave explains.
The evening run has a 7 PM start and the $20 registration includes entrance into German Fest, a $5 food/drink gift card for use at any German Fest operated booth, and a 2-for-1 coupon to return to German Fest on another day during the weekend.
For each runner registered, Usingers will be donating two pounds of sausage to St Ben's Meal.
WTMJ's Bill Michaels, the Big Unit, will be emceeing the event. Awards will be presented to the top three overall finishing times for both male and female participants. In addition, the top three male/female runners in each of the following divisions will receive awards: 14 & under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & over.
